Research Project

We were assigned a research project another college has already done. The main idea is to research my profession and the required tools and materials needed. I still have two years of Diesel left after I leave auto so I have plenty of time to think. I want to focus mainly on trucks they work on at Rush Trucking in Columbus, OH.

As of February 22, 2017 the median hourly wage for a Diesel Mechanic is $24 with a range between 21-27. In 2014 the projected 10 year growth of the job is 12%. I suspect it has grown more than that though. We have taken many field trips to Rush, Matheny, and Fyda. They all said they can't find people to work in this area that will come and stay.

Most of my money will be spent on upgrading my tools. I currently only have a Craftsman automotive 250-ish piece set. A 3-ton floor jack with stands and a bunch of power tools my grandfather left me. I'm sure my 1/2 inch ratchet that is the size of my hand won't cut it with the big boys.

I will probably need to be upgrading my arsenal here soon. Before I get into the Diesel specific, I need to make sure I have the basics.

The biggest cost would be getting a scan tool. After using the scanner we have in the shop there is no way I can use anything other than this. $3895 is a LOT of money but with the functionality this tool brings is amazing.

Now I can't do much with my $15 dollar manual ranging meter. With this $389.99 meter with a color display, temp capability, and auto ranging. This could be the second and last meter I purchase.

For personal use cordless is the way to go. I have no space for an air compressor and have no desire for a 30+ foot hose running through my yard. So this $229 18 volt 3/8 impact will make things a bit easier on me.

Now this list doesn't seem that big but it will help me further my experience in the field. Minus the scan tool these tools can last me as I further my education until I find my final resting place.

  1. Excellent job, Dalton! Good job researching the tools that you might need. Your talent with software will serve you well as the industry transverses to autonomous vehicles. Look forward to your "thinking" within the diesel program.
